Answers to Questions..That web cast was fun!

TOPSHOTS-MEXICO-EPIDEMIC-SWINE FLU

That was so much fun! I love being able to answer questions and get feed back from all of you. I hope I can do that again and we can figure out the call in feature so we can have a conversation. Thanks so much to all of you who tuned in.

One of my daughters told me I was getting too serious and I needed to have more fun so next week we are going to do another give away. So stay tuned…

For today however, here is a little new info.

Of the infected people, 56.3 percent were female and 43.7 percent male, while 77.5 percent of the infected patients were between 20 and 54 years old, the ministry said.

The ministry also said that the cases of H1N1 flu virus are distributed in the 32 states of the country, and the most affected states are Mexico City, San Luis Potosi, Hidalgo, State of Mexico and Veracruz.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there have been confirmed 11,370 cases of human flu in 41 countries, and U.S. is the country with more cases with a total of 5,764.

The Health Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden and Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein on Friday discussed the rationale behind closing individual New York City schools in response to the presence of the A/H1N1 virus in New York City.

All evidence suggests that the new virus is causing a large proportion of the city’s current flu cases, says the press release.

Some 25,000 people lost their jobs due to the previous closure of more than 2,500 restaurants in Mexico City amid the A/H1N1 flu fears, authorities said on Friday.

President of the National Chamber of the Restaurant Industry and Seasoned Food (Canirac), Francisco Mijares, said the slow reactivation of the economic activities in Mexico City was not felt in restaurants despite reopening two weeks ago.

The global financial crisis has affected the tourist and restaurant sector, but “the final shoot” was the suspension of the services for 10 days due to the A/H1N1 flu, Mijares said.

A vaccine to block the spread of swine flu isn’t expected to be ready in time for the onset of the fall flu season, when the virus is expected to make a comeback.

The seed strain required to manufacture the vaccine isn’t quite ready yet, Fraser Health medical health officer Dr. Roland Guasparini said Thursday.

But he said it’s expected the vaccine will be in production over the summer and available here by winter.

“We’re hopeful that we’ll have the vaccine for this virus perhaps sometime in December,” he said. “It will be after the regular flu vaccinations, so we’d have another round of flu shots for this virus.”

Now to a few questions:

If the H1N1 flu follows the pattern of the 1918 flu pandemic, and comes back around again and again, will the people who have caught it already be immune from it when it comes around in the fall? Or does a flu virus keep changing quickly enough to the extent that people would keep catching it, and there is no way to develop natural immunity?

No one really knows the answer to this question. IF the virus comes back in it’s current form those who have had the virus will have some immunity. IF it mutates those who have had the swine flu will not have an immunity. I would prepare as though I had no immunity to be safe.

How long can the virus live on a surface?

This current flu virus can live up to 24 hours, however, typically the flu virus can live up to 72 hours so I can’t give a definitive answer for the virus that may return. If you have the flu in your home or if someone has been in your home who you suspect has the flu, disinfect often. If you are out and about bring disinfectant wipe with you to wipe down shopping carts , door handles, etc.

Keep questions coming and I promise to have more fun next week! Have a great weekend!

I also enjoyed the radio web cast yesterday. You did a great job. Emergencies come in all forms, and I thought you handled the emergency that came midway during the calls when you lost audio contact with the host, James, extremely well. Good lesson in keeping one’s cool when “things happen.”

If only other webmasters would do what you have done and build a really worthwhile site on the subject. Most of them load the pages with junk, but this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
