These are awesome!! I love these. They provide lots of light if you have a roadside emergency. They light can be used in place of flares, in areas prone to wild fires, at accident scenes, to mark a path, where gas leaks or chemical spills are present, to create a perimeter around a hazard or as a traffic wand or signaling device.

    1. This is a great giveaway – could you let us know where to buy these (in case we don’t win :>)

    2. Sondra says:

Very excited that I won the January give away!! Woo Hoo!!

    3. Tonya says:

I am new to all this, but learning something new everyday:)

    4. Julia says:

I just wanted to comment that I found glow sticks at walmart, they were about $1.50 each in the camping section, BUT in the toy section they are only $.88, they have many colors and I’m not sure if they’re considered “industrial grade” but i’ve tried them and they are very bright! i hope that will help save someone a little money!

    5. miss_k_p says:

Light sticks are a great idea for the car, and I realize after reading your list of 72 hour kit supplies, much safer than candles. Especially with an active 10 year old and a cat! I will definately be adding these to my supplies!

    6. Amanda says:

Hooray for glow sticks! Mine end up disappearing after each 4th of July, so a new supply of them would be wonderful!

    7. Laurie says:

      Congrats Sondra!

I have a question- when you have purchased a 72 hour kit, have you added extras to it?
We have purchased a Trekker IV and split it between our two cars. There are three of us in the family and we never know which car we will be in. There is an extra back pack with a spare set of clothes to layer with. We also added a few Mountain House Meals and a water container. Any other suggestions or ideas?
The glow sticks would make a great safe addition. I want to limit it to two packs per car.
      Thanks!

    8. Mindy says:

Someone mentioned the cheaper glowsticks, which is what we usually buy for the kids to play with when we go camping. Does anyone have experience with which glow stick are better, brighter, last longer, etc? How do we know what a good one is? How long should we expect them to last? Also, I have heard that if you put them in the freezer they will glow again, is this true?

    9. Jennvan says:

I’ve been meaning to get some glow sticks to go in my car. I only have 2 in my 72 hr kit and I’d love to win some.

    10. Candy says:

I have added glowstick necklaces and even bracelets to my kits. They are great for kids and being able to see them in the dark, but they are also good to hang on door handles to help light the way in the dark. They sell them at most dollar stores, so cost isnt too much of an issue, plus it is a good distraction for the kids in a stressfull time.

    11. Toni says:

How long is the shelf life for these?

    12. Debbie Davenport says:

I usually buy glow sticks for the 4th of July too, but I think that industrial grade would be a little bit more powerful than the ones that I give to my kids to have fun with. I would imagine that anything that you would use for a 72-hour-kit would be better. That’s just my opinion, but wouldn’t they be better quality?

    13. Laree says:

The best price I’ve found on glow bracelets (for the doors, etc) is at my grocery store of all places! If any of you have an Assoicated Food’s grocerystore near by (they are mostly in the northwest – and it’s any store that will carry Western Family brands), check out their toy isle. They have a tube with 50 bracelets in it for only $5.00. They are pretty bright, and last all night long, and can also be put together into necklace lengths.

    14. Liz says:

I would have never thought of glow sticks! I’ll end that to my list in place of candles.

    15. Haley says:

I am new to your site. I really like it. I am just getting my family’s emergency kits together and can use all the help I can get.

    16. Please enter me! This is a great giveaway.

A Red Cross seminar we attended for earthquake preparedness at our old base in CA made a point of telling people to get glow sticks and battery-powered flashlights because using candles after an earthquake can be unsafe if you have a gas leak. A lot of people needed the reminder; I know I did!

    17. Kristen says:

I really am trying to get my ducks in a row during 2009. And making emergency kits is on the top of my to-do list. Please enter me in your give away! Thanks!

    18. Liz says:

Very cool giveaway! I am trying to collect things for 72 hour kits. These would be perfect!

    19. Barbara says:

I appreciate all the imformation and comments…I too am making 09 the year for preparation. I love the step by step help and resources you offer. I am a single woman with 4 adult children that live on their own. Part of my preparation is getting them to organize as well. I’m doing a monthly family e-letter to address the different things needed. Thanks again.

    20. Peggy says:

Wow, this are great! Do you know down to what temperature they work? We live in Alaska and it is not uncommon to have temperatures of -40. Will these remain viable at these temperatures? Usually candles aren’t an issue for us doing winter but it is nice to have another alternative! By the way this is the first time I’ve been too your site and love it!

    21. Sharla says:

I can’t believe I never thought of that. I always figured we have matches/lighters and candles so we’d be okay. We do have flashlights but not many and no glow sticks so this is just the kind of giveaway I need. Thanks!

    22. Kelly says:

We still use mostly candles during blackouts and it makes me so nervous! And what a great idea to have something like this in your car along with a flashlight – flashlights use up batteries so quickly if you leave them on constantly, and then you have NO light.

    23. mindy says:

      nice giveaway thanks

    24. Jessica C says:

I need to add these to our home and car emergency kits.

    25. Leslie U says:

I’ve sent glow sticks with my daughter as she’s participated in activities that go into the evening (Relay for Life, amusement parks, etc). Makes it easy to find her in a group. They can be just for fun, but also handy in an emergency while she’s away from home.

    26. carmen says:

Send some of those up north.

    27. Windy says:

Great Idea! I am so glad that I ran across your site. I have learned some helpful hints. Thank you!

    28. Carrie says:

      These are awesome, love them!

    29. Linda says:

I’m new to the glow stick idea and will add that to our 72 hour kit and work kits

    30. marc strickland says:

We are building our florida garden above the sandy soil.

We are using 4 cinder blocks on each side. We are buying pre-pacakged dirt and cutting holes on one side, flipping it over, and cutting out the top. We then place the sack in the cinder block confines and plant.

We hear that one lady has been using her dirt for 7 years, with annual rejuvenation, etc. It is difficult to plant successfully in the soil we have and this allows us to compensate. Ck out cinder block gardening on the web.

    31. Candy says:

Thanks for all you do with this website. I just added a link to you on my blog. Thanks for the giveaways too!

    32. Tonya says:
