Food Prices…a global problem…Money Saving Tips

Processed meat in American grocery store Since rising food prices are still, and will probably remain, at the top of the list of items impacting our budgets, we are going to add a few money savings tips which will help the grocery budget.

1. Freeze leftovers. That’s it. How many times do we throw away leftovers because they get pushed to the back of the fridge. Every family has at least one person who thinks leftovers are close to poison. Freeze them, bring them back out for lunch in a week or two and the meal will be new.

2. Ask about senior discounts. I was amazed to discover that Tuesday is senior day at a local grocery store and the age for a senior discount..50! What happened to 50 being the new 40? Ask everywhere you go if you are 50 or older. You may be amazed how may stores and restaurants offer discounts.

3. Cut down the amount you use. Try cutting dryer sheets in half, only use half of the laundry detergent that the manufacturer recommends, try this with all your cleaning supplies, reduce the amount recommended. In almost every case you can use much less than the amount recommended.

4. Shop in the evening. When you shop late at night you can often get great deals on items from the deli, bakery, produce and meat cases. Just ask. Most store do not carry over items to the next day. deli meats, breads, meats and dessert can all be frozen for use later. Salads and veggies can be added to your menu plan for the next day. Look for packaged products like bacon that are about to expire and ask for a mark down. Most stores would rather mark it down than throw it out.
