Hello! My name is Erica I am Carolyn’s daughter. My mom requested that I let you all know about her latest “emergency”. Last night she had a bit of an accident and cut the tip off of one of her index fingers…OUCH! We’ll spare you the details beyond that. She is, however, on the mend and in good spirits. This being said, she is going to have to take a break for a few days. If any of you are interested in doing a guest post please contact us at carolyn@totallyready.com. Please keep your comments coming. We are reading them and I will help her answer your questions when we can. Besides that I think that she would feel encouraged knowing that you are still reading and preparing.
Yesterday my mom received a great email from our January give away winner, Sondra. This is what she had to say:
I am a single mother of 2 boys. I live in the great state of Idaho and have never been through any type of disaster throughout my life. My parents taught us to be self reliant. We always had food storage, a garden and canned our food. It was a way of life for us. As a single mom, being taught to be self reliant has helped me provide for my children on my own. I tried to have food storage. However, through trial and error I am learning to store the correct food so it doesn’t go to waste. This year I have grown leaps and bounds by all the great information I’ve read. Everyday I am getting more prepared with the help of your site.
Several months ago the State of Idaho ran an advertisement campaign about a pandemic. I loved that your site offered help on preparation in the event of a pandemic. As far as a disaster, I believe we have become complacent because we don’t experience them (in my lifetime). In the event of an emergency in Idaho, there will not be warning to rush to the store as there is with a weather pattern. We will have an earthquake or volcano eruption (Yellowstone or Washington) and will have to rely on what we have prepared.
This kit will help out my little family! I am thrilled beyond words at being lucky enough to be even more prepared. There is peace of mind when you can be prepared enough to take care of yourself and your children. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to win this valuable prize – a hygiene kit. I am excited to receive it and add it to my emergency supplies.
Congratulations again Sondra! For the rest of you, keep those comments coming. Remember, the more you comment the better your chances to win and who couldn’t benefit from glow sticks?!?! We’ve got some of these in our cars and under our beds and they are not your ordinary glow sticks.
I’m so sorry to hear about your finger! What a pain, literally! I did a similar thing a year ago and I remember how much I missed using my hand! Hang in there!
I am such a fan of your site. I recently started a site of my own with handouts for my ward and I frequently link to posts on your site or mention ideas you’ve taught me (giving you the credit, of course!). Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
Ouch! I did the same thing myself several years ago and not only was it no fun it was awful not being able to do so many things that I was used to… Best wishes on the recovery!
Yikes! Hope she’s healed up soon!
Great response from Sondra – she brought up such excellent points. It behooves us to know what sort of “emergencies” can occur – and to remember we can’t prepare for everything, but we can always *try*.
I’m among the others that did this too, years ago. It reminds me though to make sure my first aid kit is still full and has not been raided.
Hope that finger heals soon!
Ouch! Hope the finger heals well and quickly! We’ll miss your posts, but will do just fine “plodding along” until you are able to return. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
The last few days have been a bit anxiety ridden for me. My husband is a professor and budgets just keep getting cut. He doesn’t have tenure yet, so the possibilities of a job loss are out there. Just yesterday he reported that for an assistant professor position opening in his college they generally receive 20 to 30 applications. For this one position (starting wage approx $45,000) they had over 200 applicants! Among those were a number of professors from Ivy league universities that had lost their positions. This is just a smaller state university. The competition for what jobs are out there is immense. As a family, we are really focusing on being prepared for ANYTHING. Although pandemic preparedness is important, right now we are just trying to figure out the best way to insulate our family from financial crisis. I so appreciate your no-nonsense and practical advice. THANK YOU for helping to ease my worries by being more prepared.
Sorry to hear about your accident! Hope you heal quickly. I’ll miss your posts, but there is lots on your site that I can catch up on. Thank you so much for all of your work to help us become better prepared!
Best Wishes for a speedy recovery. This is one of those things that is so inconvenient and all of a sudden the finger is sticking out there all the time.
This reminded me of a conversation a friend and I had this morning. (Although it certainly wouldn’t be the solution in the case of the cut off finger.)
I grew up on a farm in Wyoming. We never went to the doctor unless it was a dire emergency. The cure for EVERYTHING was epsom salts. Step on a nail? Soak it in hot epsom salts water. Sprain an ankle? Soak it in epsom salts. Tear your finger/toe nail back and get an infection? Open it up and soak in hot epsom salts.
Although I don’t believe that epsom salts is the cure for everything.I am going to pick up some epsom salts the next time I’m at WalMart.
After reading all the posts, I realize that regardless of what area of the country we’re in or what station of life, we have to prepare for hardships. I am almost the sole provider for my granddaughter and her family (husband and 2 small boys). She works part time but her husband has been unable to find work. Through this blog and other sites, I’m slowly getting Brandi to understand the importance of self-reliance and food storage. I am getting older and not in the greatest of health, and I’m afraid something might happen to take my support out of their financial picture. That’s my preparedness goal…to help her and her little family become preparedness savy so, if something happens to me, they can take care of themselves. Thanks for all the work you do in bringing us info we need. Hope that pesky injury heals in no time and you are back to normal.
I’m very saddened to hear of your injury. Hope that the well wishes sent your way from all your fans and “Net” buddies help somewhat in speeding along the healing.
Best wishes to you and yours and BE SAFE…!
Use the time to do some studying. You’re in my prayers tonight.
Good idea to keep glowsticks under the bed. I don’t think I would have thought of that, although now it seems obvious that you may be in bed and have to fumble to get light.
