Money Saving Tips

Since we are using food storage to hedge the cost of rising prices and since we know having food storage will actually make us more money than other investments today I want to share shop shopping tips.

1. Always get rain checks on sale items. When they ask you how many you want ask if there is a limit and tell them that is what you want. If there is no limit tell them you want a case. When the items come in you can always take less but they won’t let you add more, especially if prices have risen since you got your rain check. Right now prices are rising every month so aks for plenty.

2. Ask about quantity discounts. This works best with smaller, mom and pop establishments. If you need a lot of an item or if you can purchase with friends this can save you quite a bit. At Totally Ready we always honor requests for discounts on volume purchases and often have groups go together to buy item.

3. Make a list and stick to it. I always allow myself $5 to spend on things that are unadvertised specials but that’s it.

4. Shop at night. Late at night, just before closing is when items in a grocery store are marked down. the don’t want to carry  over fresh item to the next day. This is especially true of meats, deli items and fruits and vegetables. They know what they have ordered for delivery the next day and they want to clean out the “old”. If they aren’t marked down ask.

  1. Buying in bulk is the best way to save, the more you buy the cheaper it actually is (even though it might not seem that way). For instance 6 lbs of honey at Costco = 8 or 9 bucks. for a 3/4ths lb bear it costs about 3 bucks. See how much you gain? Good post guys.

Lesson I learned yesterday- Store brand doesn’t mean cheaper! Sometimes it helps to figure out the cost per unit to see which one is more cost-effecient.

I think the answer to both of your posts is the same. Be aware. Some times the larger size is cheaper, sometimes it is not. Some days store brands are cheaper, some days they are not.
Most canned foods are processed by a handful of companies. They package for name brands and also store brands so both are very similar in quality. With other products the quality can be the same or very different. I suggest you buy one of a store brand item you have not tried before. Take it home and try it and then if you like it, stock up. Store brands like major brands also go on sale!
