This week has really been an interesting one for me. For those who may not be tuned in to natural disasters around the globe may have missed the 4.9 earthquake in Utah recently. Now that is not a big deal right? Right. A quake that small is rarely noticed by anyone living outside the immediately affected area. With what I have seen in my mail this week you would think this had been a 7.0. Why? The answer is probably because the “that won’t happen to me” attitude amongst most of our friends and family. I even named my first ebook “That Won’t Happen to Me”. In some areas so many of us seem to be stuck in the teen mentality. Well, Utah is overdue for a big, big, quake. Until now most thought it wouldn’t happen but now people are beginning to suspect that scientist who track these things may actually be on the right track. I have answered many…questions this week and I really hope these people will stay motivated to keep preparing. I am renewing my efforts to finish my next book which will include the plan we followed in 2008 to do seven things (our Seven Steps) to prepare each week. It will also include the plan for stocking the food department of our General Store. I hope for those of you with family and friends in Utah and Wyoming this will give you the opportunity really discuss preparedness.
Then there is the volcano in Iceland. Did you hear that this eruption could trigger the neighboring volcano to erupt? Did you hear that this could continue for years? This is exactly what happened the last time this volcano blew it’s top. The ash has already affected populations thousands of miles away and over the next several days the ash cloud will make it’s way around the world.
I am so excited about the Dutch Oven recipes I have been developing. This past week I spent several days with friends at a quilting retreat. I baked three different breads in my Dutch oven and took them with me. They all got rave reviews. I am so….excited. I have been concerned about having recipes that can be made by those with little or no baking skills during a power outage. I guess all the talk about EMPs and Solar flares have really gotten me thinking about life without power. I will add all of those to the recipe book I’m working on and also add them to upcoming Newsletters.
As for our General Store this week, add shampoo and conditioner to your shelves. I checked out the ads in the Sunday newspaper and it seemed every store had shampoo and conditioner on sale this week so I thought it was a good time to add these items. Refer to the notes you have been taking, and based on the amount you used during the past month, multiply by three and add that amount to have a three month supply. If you have the money consider adding a few more of these items since they can be stored for years and you will definitely rotate them with no problem.
