Our General Store…Lessons From a Family Reunion…Spoons, Forks and Condiments

IMG_0852.JPG

The past week we gathered as a family, all 18 of us. A reunion is a great time to evaluate your storage and your real needs if you should have to survive on it. We went through boxes….of cold cereal. Of course in a real emergency we would have been eating our oatmeal and other hot cereal as well as pancakes but boy did we go through cereal! We wrote our names on our paper cups but if a drink was left in a cup for too long the cup leaked and had to be replaced. For those who drank all their water the cups lasted all day. We saved them and added them to the fire when we made smores, thus saving the room for other items on the trash can. I did realize that plastic spoons and forks could also be used for an entire day instead of just one meal if the had names written on them also. All this name writing reminded me of the need for permanent markers in our General Store.

This year I made chocolate frosting to use in our smores and everyone loved it and even preferred it as it was easy to bite, unlike a candy bar.

This week add plastic forks and spoons to your General Store. For those working on their food department also add five pounds of protein per person. Remember protein is not only meat and fish but also nuts, nut butters and beans.

Happy stocking!

For our Family reunion we had individual bottles of water – names on them with Sharpies – then they used them for the whole time. We had a can of powdered pink lemonade that they could fill their bottles with a small scoop and add water. We always kept a 5 or 10 gallon jug of ice water available to refill the bottles. That saved the cups which would be used for juice for breakfast.

Chocolate frosting!?! Brilliant. And having Sharpies in a year’s supply is next on my list of things to get.
