Our General Store…Desserts!!!

Every good General Store must  include a dessert department. Whether it be a natural disaster, job loss, pandemic, or unexpected guests, desserts are a must for getting through. The next two months are the best time all year to stock your shelves with items to use when making treats for your family for the next year. Today is the perfect day to scout out the candy section of your grocery and pharmacy stores. All the Halloween candy will be on sale, cheap. Candy freezes very well, and many can be store without freezing.

I love to make brownies with peanut butter cups in the center. We began this tradition as a family when the band program in our school district was eliminated. I began making these “cupcake” brownies to sell so we could raise the money to pay the salary of our band teacher. Over the next 12 years we served them at every fund raiser and they became known as Music Booster Brownies. I stock up on peanut butter cups after Halloween because they freeze well and I don’t care what the wrappers look like.

This week purchase the ingredients or prepackaged mixes to make seven desserts. If you are purchasing mixes place them in the freezer for 24-48 hours and then seal them well before putting them on your shelf. I use wide packing tape and tape both ends of the boxes so nothing can get in or get out of the package. It works. I opened a package not too long ago that was filled with moths. Yuk! They were all sealed inside and none got into anything else in our cupboards. Infestations are a fact of life, they come from the manufacturers and no matter how great a house keeper you are, they will happen. They can be prevented or at least minimized, using this method.

This week watch the sales and stock up on those favorite desserts. Remember, this is your food storage so if you are going to make treats for the holiday season purchase those ingredients separately.

I know you will ask so I will include the recipe for Music Booster Brownies in the November Newsletter, out later this week. I am behind due to the hacking on the blog. I promise it will be worth the wait!

Another thing to be on the look out for when you’re in the Halloween candy isle are glow sticks. Right now our Walmart has them reduced to 25 cents each. There are quite a few different colours, so if you wanted to, you could have a different colour for each person’s 72 hour kit.

And you mentioned that you used them around the house when you had the power outage.

So now is a great time to stock up on them.
