It time for another addition to the General Store in your home. This week add 6 pounds of grains per person in the family. After this week you should have a total of 18 pounds, per family member, stored. Please remember to include in your numbers any extended family or friends who may be depending on you as their out of area contact or their refuge should the pandemic become more serious this fall.
For our three month supply you should be storing only the grains you use or are learning to use and incorporate others in to your daily meals. If you would like to expand your horizons purchase a small amount of a new grain, try a few recipes and then purchase more once you know your family will eat it.
When we speak of grains we are really talking about carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of fuel and are easily used by the body for energy. Carbohydrates are needed for the central nervous system, kidneys, brain, muscles, (remember the heart is a muscle) to function properly. Carbohydrates can be stored in the muscles and liver for use later and are important in intestinal health and waste elimination. The best source of carbohydrates is grains. Grains include: whole wheat, wheat flour, bulgar, oatmeal, cornmeal, rice (white, brown and wild), buckwheat, popcorn, rye flour, barley, pasta, pretzels, couscous, amaranth, millet, quinoa, sorghum, and triticale. You can also count muffin, corn bread and pancake mixes.
There are so many to choose from.
I promised you more recipes so here is a great one:
Blender Pancakes
1C whole White or golden wheat
1 1/2 milk
1/2 c vegetable oil
1 egg
3t. baking powder
2T sugar
1t. salt
Place 1 cup milk with wheat in blend and blend for 2-3 minutes. Add remaining milk and blend another 2-3 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients and blend to combine. Use batter as you would any pancake batter and prepare pancakes as you normally do.
I just started reading this blog and I feel that I am a bit behind. What kind of list do your weekly guides come free? Is it list for the year broken down by week? Is this something you can post? I have very modest means and like to buy things on sale. I tend to plan for the sales to spread my money out. Perhaps grains are not on sale this week, but another staple item is.
Jeff, the last time I posted an updated list was at: http://blog.totallyready.com/?p=821
We have added a few things since then and you can just read through the posts or if you’d like to subscribe to the newsletter there are updates in that each month for all the programs we are working on. One of our goals with our General Store is to be able to shop only when items are on sale. I can do that now and it is wonderful!!
This pancake recipe is similar to one of my Dad’s favorites. Because you are using whole wheat in the blender, you can blend it a bit longer to get the gluten to start working and get a richer tasting pancake. (Like kneading bread more) The problem with this is that it is pretty hard on the blender. We burned out a blender before realizing that this calls for a heavy duty blender if you use it this way very often.
