Last week I went to a conference and the daughter of a friend was telling me how she was committed to having food storage in her home. The interesting part was that she commented that growing up was like growing up in a grocery store! Exactly what we want to accomplish!
As of this week we have a complete six week supply of all the food groups plus desserts. We also have a 3 month supply of condiments, soups, gelatin, baking ingredients, sugar and honey as well as TP, facial tissues, and plastic garbage bags.
Next year when are finished with our 3 month supply of foods we will continue each Monday adding non food items, medications and cleaning supplies.
Each month in our newsletter, there is a wrap-up of exactly what is in our store so if you have gotten behind and want to catch up, or if you are new and want to catch up….just check out your September newsletter. Also, in the same newsletter there are detailed instructions for waxing cheese with a link to a company to purchase the wax. After last week’s posts about the things affecting crop production and our food prices I hope you can better understand why storing your own food supply is so important.
This week we will store five pounds of protein per family member. Remember proteins includes: meat, fish, nuts and beans. We have stored peanut butter separately so you should have your three month supply of that already. Remember nuts will only keep for a year, at the most, if they are kept in a cupboard. Nuts should always be kept in the fridge or freezer.
Wahoo! I have this done. They had tuna on sale for 50 cents a can and we bought 65 cans. We already had a good 20 cans of tuna in the pantry. If nothing else, we will eat lots of Tuna! (We also have TVP, but that’s sort of long term storage and not counted by me in the store amounts.)
Now, to find other canned meats we don’t hate. I am sure beans, lentils and tuna will grow old pretty fast.
