Before we get to our General Store for this week a few items to review. I have decided I must have one of the worst internet providers on the planet! We were up and down again all weekend, and yesterday, which is why this post is a day late. When trying to write a post I kept losing it and finally just gave up! So, I apologize.
Second the November Newsletter went out last week and if you subscribed and did not receive one please let me know. They should have all gone out but with these problems I want ot make sure I didn’t miss anyone. This issue featured:
A recap of the items that should now be in your General Store
Basic Survival Skills: Water
Recipes: Rotating Food Storage
Winter Weather Warnings and Alerts
Preparing Your Car For Winter
Assembling a Winter Auto Kit
Next: I was very surprised that I had not sold any raffle tickets this weekend. Today I received an email making me aware that the link was not working. I told you it’s been a tough week technically for me! The link is fixed so please encourage your friends to take a look at the wall hanging/ table topper and the reason for the raffle.
http://blog.totallyready.com/please-help-this-family/11/06/ Thank you so much.
Finally our GENERAL STORE. This week it is time to add more protein to your store. This is a great week for this because meat is on sale. This is the week that most grocery stores begin their Thanksgiving free turkey giveaways. You know, the if you spend_____ you get a free turkey. This is usually a two week promotion so I get two! The grocery store here that does the promotion is the more expensive in town and I normally do not shop there but the next two weeks I will go and stock up on items that are on sale or those that are the same price as the less expensive store in town. Hams and roasts are also traditionally on sale this week.
You may wonder what to do with an extra turkey or large ham. There are a few things.
You can freeze them the way they are and use them later. We love to barbecue our turkey and that can be done for a family reunion or any party with a group of friends any time of the year.
You can cut the meat into smaller portions and freeze them. Be sure to wrap well and date them.
You can cook them and put them into casseroles and stews which can be frozen and used as a quick meal.
You can can them. It is not difficult to can meats. You do need a pressure cooker but don’t let that frighten you. Pressure cookers are safe to use and the canned meat is wonderful. There were a few recipes in November’s newsletter and on our yahoo group for using canned meats. They were yummy. If any of you have more recipes for how you use canned meat please post them here, or better yet, on the yahoo group. The yahoo posts go out to all members of the group so they get the info even during times when they may not be able to check the blog each day.
