Pandemic Prep…Food Crisis Follow Up…Dust Bowl Lesson

Farmer and sons walking in the face of a dust ...

Just a quick report on the H1N1. This morning the CDC announced the status of the flu in the U.S.. Right now the flu they are seeing in emergency rooms and doctor’s offices is the H1N1 and not the seasonal flu. We expected that would be the case when we began our pandemic planning last year. The H1N1 is affecting children and young adults at a much higher rate than seasonal flu and in greater number than it is affecting those who are over 50. Again we expected that. The death rate from the H1N1 is about the same or a little less than from the seasonal flu. That is very good news. However, if this remains the case it means we could see deaths as high as 36,000 (the Number who die each year from seasonal flu) to 100,000 if, in fact, three times as many people get the H1N1 as contract the seasonal flu. The other concern is that those deaths would be largely among children and young adults. These numbers only reflect deaths from the H1N1. We can still expect 36,000 (approximately) deaths from the seasonal flu in addition. So, should we be panicked? Of course not, those who are prepared NEVER need to panic. Should we be concerned? Yes, when it comes to disease we are never in control, the disease is. Should we change our plans or life style? No, only in that we should be more careful to avoid germs and ready to keep our children home should this become more serious in your home town. If the flu seems to be running wild in your school I would keep my kids home for a week, especially if they already have a cold or any pre-existing illness which could leave them in with a weakened immune system. You will need to make that decision when and if that time comes.

Did you see the Sean Hannity Show last night? If you missed it please, please view the following links and pass them along to others. It is bad enough that nature has us on the ropes with flooding last spring in the mid west destroying crops, the drought in California, corn mold in the mid west this year, hail destroying potato plants in Idaho, fungus on tomato and potato plants in the northeastern United States, hail storms destroying corn crops and an infestation of grasshopper threatening winter wheat. As you watch the videos pay attention to the soil. It is blowing away. This is what happened during the dust bowl era. The good top soil blew away. This has very long term consequences. All of this is exactly the reason we MUST become self reliant and able to care for our own.

There is 40% unemployment in parts of California’s central valley…40%!!! The state government is providing food but if you listen to the woman they interview she says she sometimes buys meat to add to the food she receives. That’s right, no meat. The government has decided what these families can eat. Do we really want the government making these choices for our family? We must become prepared and we must become involved to protect the future for our children.

I could not find a clip of the environmentalist who was on the show but that was really bizarre. He said this problem was created because we sold water to southern California. Hmmm…so now he is saying we should keep our water and water crops while those in southern California are left without water to drink. Yes, we sell our water but it is the drinking water for the millions who live south of the Grapevine. The state has done this for years. We sold water we controlled, and received water the federal government controlled and everyone’s needs were met.  Is he suggesting because the federal government has cut off our federal water the state should cut off the state water to So. Cal.? Please help spread the word so people will understand and become involved, before we see all our food come from foreign sources.

Henry Kissinger said: “If you control the oil you control the country; if you control the food, you control the population” We have seen the control the middle east has over us as far as oil is concerned. We can stop or curtail driving. Do we want a foreign country to have even greater power over individuals? We can not just stop eating. Food is a far more powerful weapon than oil.

When we are self reliant we have the power to fight the good fight. When we are dependent we lose much of that ability. It is hard to fight a government when they have the power cut off your food, health care, and as evidenced in California, even your water.

All I can say is that the more you are dependent on outside sources the more at risk you are. History says that there might be a big deal made for a while and a lot of promises but when the media goes away so will the help. Sad. Long term we will end up even more dependent on outside countries when we could be independent with just a little effort.

I seen that story on Fox…. Simply amazing that this is going on and that a stupid minnow is more important than human life.
