Wood coals work just as well. You will need to experiment a little before you really need to use them but even taking coals from the fire and placing you Dutch oven in a galvanized tub with coals on the bottom and them more coals on top of the Dutch oven can work for foods that need a shorter cooking time. For Puff Pancakes in the oven I use a slightly different recipe. 6 eggs, 1 C flour, 1 C milk, 1/2 tsp. salt and 2 T butter. Place all in blender and then pour into oven proof dish. Bake uncovered 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Don't peek or it will fall! It is very very yummy!

Just wondering...what temp you'd recommend in the "traditional" oven for this? Sounds terrific!

We have a woodstove and haven't figured out how the whole "briquets" issue would work in the woodstove...would wood coals substitute for the briquets?

Thanks!
