If I buy rice in a plastic bag at the grocery store how long is it good for? I’ll be storing it in a box in an extra closet in my apartment.

I’m so glad I’ve found your blog! It’s been a big help and given me lots of ideas on what I need to be doing. Thank you!

I’m so glad you found us too and that you are finding some answers. Rice will keep for 20 years. The problem is keeping pests and mice out. If you are using a closet I would suggest you get a 5 gallon bucket and store your rice in it. If you are getting less rice than will fill the bucket you can store other items, in their original packaging, with the rice. When I store items in their original packaging I always make sure the packing is as strong as possible so one item can not infest another. With pancake mix, for example, I fold down the top of the bag as far as possible and tape it well with packing tape. Then I tape the seam on the bottom of the bag. The goal is to seal any area a pest can get in or out. Make sure you never store spices or anything mint with other foods as your rice will soon taste like mint or chili powder. I hope that helps.
