Woo..Hooo..Passed my Amateur Radio Exam Today

I just got home from a long….day of study and testing and I am now officially a HAM! I have long known the value of an amateur radio license in case of emergency but since my husband and sons have their’s I never did anything about it. Since I am doing more teaching, writing, and lecturing I decided now was the time. Now if the power is out I can still be in touch with my husband and other operators no matter where they live, in this country or another. There was a little 9 year old girl in the class who also passed! Yes, your child can be the big shot at scout camp or just when out hiking with friends. It’s a great idea. Cell phones, land lines, radio stations and television stations may be shut down but Amateur Radio Operators will be able to get the news and contact loved ones. Think about it.

For those of you who have been writing and asking about my web cast last week, you can hear that at:

I plan to do more and would really love to know what you think and what you would like to learn about. Please send me your suggestions.

For now I’m hitting th sofa and putting my feet up.

Nice job! Congratulations. :-) This is something I’ve been thinking about doing as well – now you’ve inspired me to look further into it. Love your comment about impressing the kids at Scouts too – might be a way to get my daughter interested. Then again, as much as she talks …. the other operators might prefer I not do that. haha

    Congrats again!!!

You should do it together. The little girl I spoke about did it with her mom. Mom was worried she’d be the one to fail! Did you know an amateur radio operator can talk to astronauts while they are in space, even with the first level license? A technician. Pretty cool….

Congratulations! I’ve been thinking about doing this too so that I would know that we would have some means of communication during an emergency.

Which level HAM operator do you suggest a person study and test for?

That’s pretty cool! I need to do that!

    Congratulations!

Would you please write a post about how this equipment works in a power failure situation? I’ve looked, in confusion, at various models offered on the internet, but haven’t got it figured out.

I assume some of the models have a battery backup. Is that so, and how do you know which ones if it doesn’t say so clearly on the product description?

Do all the pieces of the system, whatever they are (microphone, etc.), have battery options?

What kind of batteries are used? Are they standard batteries that can be recharged in a solar charger?

If the only way to use a ham radio is to take it to the car and use it till the car battery runs down, or use a gasoline powered generator, it wouldn’t be worth it to me. But if there’s a way (like rechargeable batteries)to keep one going without grid electricity for an extended period of time, I’d love to know about it.

    Many thanks.

    Congratulations
I ran across this doing a google search and that is great. This is something that anyone that wants to be prepared for emergency’s should consider doing. This is the only form of communication that I know of that will work with no grid support. Feel free to put up a link to the site I listed. It is only 4 days old but it gets a whole bunch of traffic and we are updating it with good useful information all the time. There are a lot of links to free software for Ham radio. 4 days old and over 500 hits so this is a very hot topic at the moment and the more word we can spread about how Ham radio and being prepared go hand in hand the better again Congratulations and I hope we can chat On The Air someday 73 W4DMH
