We have discussed this possibility many times and now it has happened. Doctors are reporting a severe form of the H1N1 virus which goes directly to the lungs.
Some countries are reporting that as many as 15 percent of patients hospitalized with the new H1N1 pandemic virus need intensive care, further straining already overburdened healthcare systems, WHO said in an update on the pandemic.
“During the winter season in the southern hemisphere, several countries have viewed the need for intensive care as the greatest burden on health services,” it said.
“Preparedness measures need to anticipate this increased demand on intensive care units, which could be overwhelmed by a sudden surge in the number of severe cases.”
Earlier, WHO reported that H1N1 had reached epidemic levels in Japan, signaling an early start to what may be a long influenza season this year, and that it was also worsening in tropical regions.
“Perhaps most significantly, clinicians from around the world are reporting a very severe form of disease, also in young and otherwise healthy people, which is rarely seen during seasonal influenza infections,” WHO said.
“In these patients, the virus directly infects the lung, causing severe respiratory failure. Saving these lives depends on highly specialized and demanding care in intensive care units, usually with long and costly stays.”
I can not begin to tell you how frustrated I am with the government and the media, especially the media for ignoring this for so long. Most of the information from government and media sources is directed to businesses preparing and hand washing and how to sneeze. It is not at all helpful when you consider the safety of your family. I have tried since last October, long before the H1N1 arrived on the scene to help you prepare. I hope you have shared what you have learned and that you have purchased Prep Not Panic: Keys to Surviving the Next Pandemic or gathered all the post here and placed them in a binder for reference, and encouraged your fiends to do the same. I have tried to contact media outlets with very little results. If any of you have media connections or connections with an HR person at a business, please encourage them to report on what individuals can do to prepare for the return of the H1N1 in a few weeks. Please have them contact me. I know I do not have all the answers but right now no one seems to be reporting any of the answers.
Earl Brown, a virologist and director of University of Ottawa’s Emerging Pathogens Research Centre, says what experts are grappling with, as H1N1 weaves its way through the Southern Hemisphere, is how serious it will be when it returns to North America.
“Is it going to be 1918 and shake your boots or is it going to be more of the 1957 and 1968 pandemics? Right now, it looks like ’57,” Brown says.
The 1918 H1N1 Spanish flu killed 20 million and 50 million people worldwide, while the 1957 avian flu took about two million lives. Given the 1957 flu is said to have been three to four times the death rate of the common flu, an H1N1 outbreak of similar intensity could kill at least 9,000 Canadians.

Wow, this is really starting to feel real. All of these scenarios we have gone over are actually coming to pass. I restocked my hand soap and tylenol today…I am grateful that we are discussing this here, even if we are not hearing much that is useful from the media.
I’m interested in buying your book for my children and nieces and nephews.
I am interested in the book “Prep, Not Panic”
Please let me know how I can get it.
